Each and every day we come across news about sexual abuses from all the parts of our country. Nothing new in this right, with our country, progressing towards the future similarly sexual mentality of few men has taken the opposite path that is touching new levels of degradation day by day.
This time the news is from Jorhat, which is popularly known as the “Knowledge City of Assam”.
Recently a man named Samrit Kumar Das of Garmur Jorhat, who by profession is an Assistant Manager of Vijaya Bank, Golaghat branch was caught masturbating on the road in front of a girl’s hostel.
The entire incident took place in broad daylight on 12th of May at Choladhora.
As told to us, this was not the first time that man did something like this. Samrit frequently used to visit near various girl’s hostels around the city and would carry out his act openly.
The entire incident was captured on camera by a girl and was later posted on Facebook by Abhinav Bharali a friend of her.
On being asked about the incident Abhinav said, “I had been informed by some of my female friends who stay at Hostels at my hometown Jorhat, that some guys were there who kept on giving explicit sexual signals to the girls from the street below. At first,I was shocked because Jorhat is considered to be the Knowledge City of Assam. They also told me that nobody believed them because this patriarchal society has always blamed the women when it comes to such kind of incidents. But a female friend of mine recorded the video of a guy masturbating in front of a hostel in broad daylight, clicked a photo with bravery and sent me. I consulted with a friend of mine, Tonoy and decided to post it on Facebook. But the videos were too explicit. I thought about it again, I questioned myself, Am I going to post these videos? But I had to”.
Here’s the Facebook post by Abhinav Bharali:
After coming to know about these videos, SFI Secretary of Jorhat unit Amar Kalita lodged an FIR with the police and a case was registered (No 1076/18) under Sections 354 B, 506 IPC and read with section 12 of the POCSO Act as there were girls below 18 years residing in the hostel.
Showing utmost responsiveness towards the matter, Jorhat Police was able to nab the culprit within 18 hours after the incident was reported.
To ensure that nothing such happens in the near future, Abhinav and his group of friends are planning to start a campaign regarding the safety of the female hostel boarders where they’ll be supported by Jorhat Police.
A similar incident took place a few days back in Kolkata where an elderly man was masturbating in a moving bus seeing two women, which was also posted on Facebook after which Kolkata Police took prompt action without needing an FIR.
