Social media giant Facebook confirms testing Aadhaar Verification feature for opening a new account on its site. The news broke out when a person named Srinivas Kodali noticed it and posted a screenshot of Facebook asking its users to provide their Aadhaar card particularly their name on Twitter.

As seen in the screenshot, Facebook has asked the user to provide the same First Name and Surname as on the Aadhaar card of the user.

Facebook India has said that this was indeed a part of a small test program that they want to implement in order to provide better security and user experience and also eliminate the chances of identity theft.

However, the prompts asking for the names of new account openers will not be seen by everyone as it is a limited scale test and also it is not necessary for the users’ to feed in the first name and surname as on their Aadhaar card respectively.

What does Facebook say about Aadhaar Verification?

According to a Facebook spokesperson,”We want to make sure people can use the names they’re known by on Facebook, and can easily connect with friends and family. This is a small test where we provide additional language when people sign up for an account to say that using the name on their Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognize them. This is an optional prompt which we are testing, people are not required to enter the name on their Aadhaar card”.

Rest time will say what Facebook does in future as of now, it is only prompting the new users’ to give their names according to their Aadhaar cards.

On a funny note, we do hope that at least it’ll help prevent the Angel and HellRider menace over facebook.
